A good quality neutral recording should respond better to EQ changes than a compressed and overboosted recording. But the actual system components and recording quality also plays an important part. Of course the actual EQ setting itself is of the utmost importance. How well can equalization works depends on a lot of factor. One of the easiest method to know the different frequency bands is to take one slider, push it to the max, pull it down to the minimum while listening through the headphones and hearing the changes brought by altering that slider. If you have a trained ears, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get a hold of the EQ game. Setting a custom EQ requires you to know precisely what frequency band to fix, and people are not born with that knowledge.
